Assignment & Test Calendar

The first 6 weeks of Speech class centers on getting the students up and onstage, speaking before the class. We have an Introductory Speech where they have to introduce another member of the class. They also have a “Who Am I?” speech where they have to design a collage of pictures that depicts their lives. The “Two Truths and a Lie” speech involves the students telling two truths about their life and one lie where the audience has to guess which is the lie. We also cover several chapters in the book on Building Responsibility, Building Confidence and Nonverbal Communication.

The second six weeks focuses on chapters focusing on Organizing Your Speech, and Speeches to Inform. The main goal is to to teach the kids how to prepare a proper outline for giving a speech, how to construct a speech and how to deliver it using all three parts of the speech, the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. This 6 weeks also largely focuses on The Informative Speech where the students are required to give a 5 to 7 minute speech informing us on some issue or topic of their choice. They are required to write a rough draft, and outline, and are allowed one notecard on which to give their speech to the class. Visual aids are also required.

The third six weeks focuses on Speeches to Persuade and Speeches for Special Occasions. The same rules and requirements for the Informative Speech also apply to these speeches.

Because the ability to communicate is vital to success in today’s world, it is imperative that our kids learn the art of communicating. I hope we accomplish that with this class.
